Young to Die
Researchers
have mapped the gene responsible
for
a heart defect that causes heart attacks and sudden death in
young people. The discovery promises not
only to provide a test to identify people with the gene, but also
gives researchers new insight into the aging process and why cells
die.
In arrhythmogenic
right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD), the disease caused by the gene,
the muscle cells of the ventricle actually die. This is caused by
a defect in apoptosis, or programmed cell death. If researchers
can learn why the ventricle cells die, they could have a window
into the process of programmed cell death
